Wall Sconce Ideas for Bedrooms, Hallways & Living Rooms

Marble wall sconce with frosted glass globe

Wall lights are the secret to a room that feels layered and cosy. They add light at eye level, highlight artwork and architecture, free up bedside tables and turn a dark corridor into a welcoming space. Here’s how to use them well – and which styles suit which rooms.

How high should wall sconces be mounted?

  • Living rooms and hallways: around 60–66 inches (150–170 cm) from the floor to the centre of the light, so bulbs sit just above eye level.
  • Bedside: roughly 20–24 inches (50–60 cm) above the top of the mattress, positioned slightly outside the edge of the bed.
  • Spacing in corridors: about every 6–8 ft (1.8–2.4 m) for an even wash of light.

Plug-in or hardwired?

Hardwired sconces give the cleanest look and should be fitted by a qualified electrician. If you rent or want to avoid rewiring, choose models with a pull cord or plug-in option and run the cable neatly along the wall.
