Outdoor Wall Lights Guide: IP Ratings, Up-Down Lights & Dusk-to-Dawn Sensors

Good outdoor lighting makes your home safer, easier to use after dark and far more inviting. The right wall lights highlight your façade, light the way to the door and turn a patio into an evening room. Here’s what to look for.

IP ratings explained

The IP (Ingress Protection) rating tells you how well a light is sealed against dust and water. The second digit is the one that matters most outdoors:

  • IP44: protected against splashes – fine under a covered porch.
  • IP65: dust-tight and protected against water jets – the safe choice for exposed walls.
  • IP67: can handle temporary immersion – for ground-level fixtures.

Up-down, linear or spotlight?

  • Up-down lights cast beams above and below, creating dramatic shapes on the wall – ideal for flanking doors.
  • Linear lights give a crisp, modern line of light along walls and entrances.
  • Spotlights aim light at paths, plants or architectural features.
  • Barn and lantern lights suit farmhouse, cottage and traditional homes.

Sensors save energy

Dusk-to-dawn sensors switch lights on automatically at nightfall; motion sensors only light up when someone approaches. Both reduce running costs and add security.

Placement tips

Mount entrance lights at about 66–72 inches (170–180 cm), roughly a third the height of the door, placed either side or above. For larger façades, repeat fixtures every 8–10 ft (2.4–3 m). Warm white (3000K) feels welcoming; cooler light suits security areas.
