How to Style Shelves & Consoles: Modern Sculptures, Vases & Candle Holders

Pastel pebble glass vase with stacked-stone lid

Decorative accents are what turn a tidy room into a personal one. A sculpture on a console, a glass vase catching the light, a candle on the coffee table – these small pieces tell your story. Here are the stylist rules that make shelves look effortless, and the pieces we love for doing it.

Five rules for styling shelves and consoles

  1. Work in odd numbers. Groups of three or five look more natural than pairs.
  2. Vary heights. Combine a tall vase, a mid-height sculpture and a low object in each grouping.
  3. Mix materials. Glass, ceramic, resin, metal and wood create interest and depth.
  4. Leave breathing space. Aim for about a third of each shelf to stay empty.
  5. Repeat a colour. Echo one accent colour across the room to tie it together.

Vases

A vase is beautiful even when empty – sculptural glass looks like art on its own, and a single stem or dried branch adds life.

Where to start

  • Console table: a lamp at one end, a vase in the middle, a sculpture and a small tray at the other.
  • Coffee table: a low candle holder, a stack of books and one sculptural object.
  • Bookshelf: alternate books standing and stacked, with a figurine or vase every few shelves.
